Radiator Not Heating Upstairs? Find the Cause

A cold bedroom radiator is more than a minor annoyance when the heating is on downstairs. If you have a radiator not heating upstairs, the cause is often a circulation, pressure or valve issue rather than the radiator itself. Some simple checks can help, but it is equally important to know when to stop and arrange professional help.

The key clue is whether one radiator is cold, several upstairs radiators are affected, or the whole top floor feels cooler. That distinction can point towards the right solution and avoid spending money on work that is not needed.

Why is my radiator not heating upstairs?

Heating systems need to push hot water from the boiler around every radiator in the home. Upstairs radiators are usually the last to receive that heat, so they can show up problems with circulation sooner than those on the ground floor.

If only one radiator is cold, a stuck valve, trapped air or a build-up of debris inside that radiator is likely. If every upstairs radiator is struggling, the issue may be low boiler pressure, poor system balancing, a circulation fault or a problem with the heating controls.

It is also worth separating a genuinely cold radiator from one that is simply not getting as hot as the downstairs rooms. A room on an exposed upper floor may lose heat more quickly through the loft, windows or external walls. However, the radiator should still warm up evenly when the heating is operating correctly.

Start with these safe, straightforward checks

Before looking at the boiler, make sure the central heating is switched on and the thermostat is set higher than the current room temperature. If you have separate heating zones or smart controls, check that the upstairs zone is scheduled to come on. A timer setting or flat thermostat battery can sometimes be the simple answer.

Next, look at the two valves at the bottom of the cold radiator. One is usually the thermostatic radiator valve, often marked with numbers, and the other is a plain manual valve or lockshield valve. Turn the thermostatic valve up fully. Do not force either valve if it feels seized.

Leave the heating running for 15 to 20 minutes, then carefully feel the radiator. Take care, as pipes and radiators can become very hot. The pattern of heat helps identify the fault:

  • Cold at the top but warmer at the bottom usually means trapped air.

  • Warm at the top but cold at the bottom can point to sludge or debris.

  • Hot near the valve but cold across most of the radiator may indicate a valve or flow problem.

  • Completely cold while other radiators are hot often suggests a stuck valve or a balancing issue.

Bleeding an upstairs radiator safely

Air naturally rises through a heating system, which is why upstairs radiators commonly need bleeding first. If the top of the radiator is cold and you can hear gurgling or trickling noises, bleeding may restore the heat.

Turn the heating off and allow the system to cool. Put an old towel and a small container beneath the bleed valve at the top corner of the radiator. Use a proper radiator key to turn the valve slowly anti-clockwise by a small amount. You should hear air escaping. Once water begins to emerge in a steady trickle, close the valve firmly but do not overtighten it.

After bleeding a sealed central-heating system, check the boiler pressure gauge. Many homes need a cold pressure around 1 to 1.5 bar, although the correct range depends on the boiler and system. If the pressure has dropped below the recommended level, it may need topping up using the filling loop or filling mechanism described in the boiler manual.

If you are unsure how to repressurise the boiler, if the pressure repeatedly falls, or if water leaks from the radiator valve after bleeding, it is best to call a qualified engineer. Repeated pressure loss is not something to ignore, as it can indicate a leak or a fault elsewhere in the system.

Check whether the radiator valve is stuck

Thermostatic radiator valves can stick, particularly after the heating has been off over summer. You may have turned the dial up, but the small pin beneath the valve head can remain closed and stop hot water entering the radiator.

Removing a thermostatic valve head is straightforward on some models, but the method varies and forcing the wrong part can cause damage. The pin should move gently up and down. If it is stuck, a heating engineer can free it, replace the valve if necessary and make sure it is not leaking.

Avoid trying to dismantle a valve while the system is hot or pressurised. A small job can quickly turn into a water leak if the valve body is disturbed.

Could your system need balancing?

A common reason for a radiator not heating upstairs is an unbalanced heating system. In simple terms, hot water takes the easiest route around the pipework. Radiators closest to the boiler can heat quickly and take more than their share of the flow, leaving those furthest away, often upstairs, lukewarm or cold.

Balancing adjusts the lockshield valves so each radiator receives an appropriate amount of hot water. It is different from turning up the thermostatic valve. The process takes patience because every radiator needs to be assessed as the system warms up.

You can sometimes improve matters by slightly reducing the lockshield valve on radiators that become very hot first. However, too much adjustment can make other rooms cold or hide a deeper circulation problem. Professional balancing is particularly worthwhile after a new boiler installation, radiator changes or alterations to the pipework.

When cold radiators point to sludge or poor circulation

Older heating systems can collect rust, scale and debris over time. This sludge settles at the bottom of radiators and restricts the flow of hot water. A radiator that is cold along its lower edge, despite open valves and correct pressure, is a typical warning sign.

The right remedy depends on the condition of the system. One affected radiator may be removed and flushed. If several radiators have cold spots, dirty water, frequent valve issues or poor heat throughout the home, a more thorough system clean may be recommended. This could involve a powerflush or another appropriate cleaning method, followed by inhibitor to help protect the system.

A flush is not automatically the answer to every cold radiator. On an older system, an engineer should assess the boiler, pipework, radiators and water quality first. That helps ensure the work is worthwhile and avoids unnecessary disruption.

Look at boiler pressure, pump and controls

When all upstairs radiators are underperforming, check the boiler display or pressure gauge. Low pressure can reduce circulation, while boiler fault codes, unusual noises or a boiler that keeps switching off need professional attention.

The circulation pump is another possible cause. If it is weak, incorrectly set or faulty, hot water may not reach the highest or most distant radiators effectively. Modern boilers often contain an internal pump, while some older systems have external components. This is not a DIY repair. Boiler casings and internal parts must only be worked on by a Gas Safe registered engineer.

Properties with multiple storeys, extensions or converted loft spaces may also have pipework that needs more careful balancing or control adjustments. In these cases, the solution may be as simple as a valve setting, but an engineer should confirm the cause before recommending replacement parts.

When to call a heating engineer

Arrange a professional visit if bleeding and checking the valves does not improve the radiator, if boiler pressure keeps dropping, or if more than one upstairs radiator remains cold. You should also seek help promptly if you notice leaking water, smells from the boiler, banging noises, discoloured system water or a boiler fault code.
