A boiler pressure gauge that is fine at bedtime but close to zero by morning is frustrating, especially when it leaves you with no heating or hot water at the start of the day. If your boiler is losing pressure overnight, it usually means water is escaping somewhere in the sealed heating system or a component inside the boiler needs attention. Do not worry - the cause is often repairable, but repeated topping up is not a long-term solution.
Boiler losing pressure overnight: what the gauge is telling you
Most modern sealed heating systems should sit at around 1 to 1.5 bar when cold, although your boiler manual is always the best guide for your specific model. When the heating comes on, the pressure normally rises a little as the water warms up. It should then return close to its original reading once the system has cooled.
A small change on the gauge can be normal. A substantial drop overnight, particularly from around 1.5 bar to below 0.5 bar or zero, is not. It is a sign that the system is losing water, releasing pressure, or suffering from a fault that needs proper diagnosis.
The timing can be misleading. The problem may not actually happen during the night. A pressure relief valve, for example, may release water while the heating is running in the evening, then the gauge simply shows the result after the boiler has cooled down.
Check the pressure pattern before assuming the worst
Before arranging a repair, it helps to make a brief note of what the gauge does. Check it when the boiler and radiators are completely cold, then check again after the heating has been running for an hour or two. Finally, look at it again the following morning.
If the pressure climbs sharply when hot - perhaps towards 2.5 or 3 bar - and is much lower when cold, an expansion vessel or pressure relief valve fault becomes more likely. The expansion vessel manages the natural increase in water volume as your heating warms up. When it loses its charge or fails, pressure can rise too high and the boiler may discharge water to protect itself.
If the pressure steadily falls whether the heating is on or off, a small leak somewhere in the boiler, pipework or radiators may be the more likely explanation. This is why one pressure reading alone rarely gives the full picture.
Repressurise once, not repeatedly
If the pressure is low, you may be able to repressurise the boiler using the filling loop or built-in filling mechanism, following the manufacturer’s instructions. Do this only when the system is cold and stop at the recommended pressure, commonly around 1 to 1.5 bar.
It is reasonable to do this once to restore heating while you arrange advice. It is not sensible to keep refilling the system every day or every week. Fresh water introduces oxygen and minerals into the system, which can encourage internal corrosion, sludge and further problems over time. If the pressure falls again, the underlying fault needs to be found.
Common reasons a boiler loses pressure overnight
A leak from a radiator, valve or pipe joint
Small leaks are one of the most common causes. Look around radiator valves, towel rails, visible pipework and joints for damp patches, staining, rust marks or a white or greenish residue. A leak can be so slight that it evaporates before it forms a noticeable puddle, particularly around hot pipes.
Check beneath the boiler too, but do not remove its casing. Water inside a boiler should only be investigated by a Gas Safe registered engineer. Some leaks are hidden under floors, behind boxing or within walls, so a clear visual inspection does not completely rule them out.
If you have recently had decorating, flooring or plumbing work completed, mention this when booking a repair. A disturbed radiator valve or pipe connection can sometimes be the clue.
A pressure relief valve releasing water
The pressure relief valve is a safety device. It opens to release water if system pressure becomes excessive, protecting the boiler and heating system from damage. It is often connected to a copper pipe that runs through an outside wall.
When the boiler is cold, carefully look for drips, wet ground or signs of regular water discharge from this pipe. If it is releasing water, the valve may be worn, or it may be doing its job because pressure is rising too high when the heating is on. Both situations require an engineer’s assessment rather than a quick top-up.
A faulty expansion vessel
An expansion vessel fault commonly causes a distinctive pattern: normal pressure when cold, a steep rise as the heating gets hot, then a low reading after the system cools. In some cases, water may be discharged outside through the pressure relief pipe during the high-pressure stage.
The vessel can often be recharged if its internal components are sound, but it may need replacing if it has failed. The right repair depends on the boiler model, its age and the condition of the rest of the system. A qualified engineer can test the vessel and check whether the pressure relief valve has also been affected.
An internal boiler leak or component fault
A boiler has several seals, connections and internal components that can deteriorate with age. A minor internal leak may not be visible to a homeowner but can still lead to a gradual loss of pressure. The same applies to a leaking heat exchanger, pump connection or automatic air vent.

Safe checks you can carry out at home

Next, look around accessible radiators and visible pipework for moisture. Run a dry tissue around valve connections if you suspect a very small leak. You can also check whether the external pressure relief pipe is damp, while taking care not to interfere with it.
Keep an eye out for other clues. Frequent gurgling radiators, brown staining around valves, boiler fault codes, a drop in hot-water performance or a boiler that needs topping up more than once are all worth reporting. The more detail you can provide, the quicker the diagnosis is likely to be.
Do not use leak-sealing additives without professional advice. They can occasionally be appropriate in a specific system, but they can also mask a fault and are not suitable for every boiler or type of pipework.

You should also arrange an inspection if the gauge rises close to 3 bar when the heating is running, if water is coming from the outside discharge pipe, or if you can see a leak around the boiler or heating system.
