No Hot Water Boiler Problem? What to Check First

A no hot water boiler problem is rarely convenient. It often appears just before the school run, after a long day at work, or when guests are due to arrive. The good news is that some causes are simple to identify, while others need a qualified Gas Safe engineer to put right safely.

Before assuming your boiler has failed completely, take a calm look at what is and is not working. Is the heating still coming on? Are all taps affected, or only one? Is there an error code on the boiler display? These details help narrow down the cause and can make a repair visit quicker and more straightforward.

Start with the safe, simple checks

First, check whether your boiler has power. The display should be lit and there should be no obvious issue with the fused spur, consumer unit or prepayment meter. If the boiler screen is blank, a tripped electrical circuit or power supply issue may be responsible rather than a fault inside the boiler.

Next, look at the boiler pressure gauge. Most sealed heating systems work best when the pressure is around 1 to 1.5 bar when cold. If it has dropped below 1 bar, the boiler may shut down or struggle to provide heating and hot water. Some boilers show low pressure as an error code.

Many modern systems can be repressurised using the filling loop or built-in filling key, but only do this if you have been shown how and your boiler instructions are clear. Adding too much pressure can create a different problem. If pressure keeps falling after being topped up, this may point to a leak, a faulty pressure relief valve or an expansion vessel issue. Also check the controls. Make sure the programmer has not been set to heating only, holiday mode or an unexpected timed schedule. If you have a smart thermostat, check its battery level and connection. Is it hot water only, or heating as well?

This is one of the most useful clues when dealing with a no hot water boiler problem. If you have no heating and no hot water, the cause could be low system pressure, a boiler lockout, a loss of power, a frozen condensate pipe in cold weather, or a more significant internal fault.

If the radiators heat up but the taps run cold, the boiler may be working but not switching correctly to hot water demand. On a combi boiler, this can be caused by a faulty diverter valve, flow sensor or domestic hot water sensor. If only one tap or shower is affected, the boiler may not be the culprit at all. A blocked tap aerator, failed shower cartridge or local plumbing restriction can reduce or stop hot water at a single outlet. Try another hot tap before arranging a boiler repair.

Check the boiler display, but do not remove the casing

An error code can provide a useful starting point. Write down the code exactly as it appears, along with the boiler make and model. A code relating to ignition, pressure, circulation or overheating gives an engineer valuable information before they arrive.

You may be able to use the reset button once if your boiler manual permits it. A single reset after a brief interruption can sometimes restore the boiler. Repeatedly resetting a boiler is not a solution, however. If it locks out again, there is an underlying reason that needs diagnosing.

Do not remove the boiler casing or try to repair components yourself. Boilers contain gas, electrical parts and combustion systems that must be checked correctly. What appears to be a small fault can become unsafe if the wrong component is disturbed or fitted incorrectly.

Cold weather and frozen condensate pipes

During a sharp cold spell, a condensing boiler can stop because its external condensate pipe has frozen. You may see a fault code, hear gurgling, or notice that the boiler has shut down after working normally earlier in the day.

If the pipe is easy and safe to reach at ground level, it can sometimes be thawed gently using warm water. Never use boiling water, a flame or any sharp tool. Take care around slippery surfaces and avoid attempting anything at height. Once the pipe is clear, reset the boiler once according to the manufacturer’s guidance.

If the pipe is inaccessible, keeps freezing, or you are unsure what you are looking at, arrange an engineer visit. A professional can check that the pipe has the correct route, fall and protection to reduce the chance of a repeat problem.

When no hot water could be a safety issue

Most boiler faults are inconvenient rather than immediately dangerous, but there are situations where you should act without delay. If you smell gas, suspect a gas leak, feel unwell with headaches or nausea, or a carbon monoxide alarm sounds, turn off the appliance if it is safe to do so, open doors and windows, leave the property, and contact the gas emergency service. Do not use electrical switches, naked flames or cigarettes near a suspected gas leak.

Soot marks around the boiler, yellow or lazy-looking flames on older gas appliances, persistent condensation in unusual places, or a boiler that repeatedly cuts out should also be investigated promptly. A properly maintained boiler should burn safely and operate consistently.

Annual servicing is not just about keeping a warranty valid. It gives an engineer the opportunity to check combustion, ventilation, safety devices, pressure, seals and the general condition of the appliance before a small developing issue leaves you without hot water.

Common reasons boilers stop providing hot water

The exact cause depends on your boiler type, age and service history. In practice, engineers regularly find a handful of common issues:

  • Low system pressure, often caused by a small leak or pressure relief issue.

  • A faulty diverter valve on a combi boiler, meaning hot water demand is not being prioritised.

  • A failed sensor, thermostat or flow switch that prevents the boiler firing for hot water.

  • A blocked plate heat exchanger, particularly in hard-water areas, which can restrict heat transfer.

  • A fault with the programmer, motorised valve or cylinder controls on stored hot water systems.

  • Ignition, fan, pump or condensate faults that cause the boiler to lock out.

The right repair is not always the most obvious one. Replacing a part without proper testing can be costly and may not solve the underlying fault. A qualified engineer should diagnose the system, explain what has failed, and set out the practical repair options before work begins.

Repair or replacement: which makes better sense?

A repair is often the sensible choice when the boiler is relatively modern, has been serviced regularly and needs a straightforward replacement part. It is usually faster and more affordable than changing the entire appliance.

Replacement becomes worth considering when a boiler is old, inefficient, unreliable or has several costly faults over a short period. Availability of parts matters too. An inexpensive repair can be poor value if another major component is likely to fail soon afterwards.

A good engineer will not push a new boiler where a safe, sensible repair will do. Equally, they should be honest when continued repairs are becoming a false economy. Modern boilers can offer improved efficiency and, with suitable products, warranty options of up to 10 years for added reassurance.
