Why Is My Boiler Losing Pressure? Causes and Fixes

A boiler pressure gauge dropping is unsettling, particularly when you rely on it for hot water and a warm home. If you are asking, “why is my boiler losing pressure?”, the short answer is that water is leaving the sealed heating system somewhere - but the cause can range from a minor radiator issue to a fault that needs professional repair.

Do not worry if it has happened once. A small pressure reduction after bleeding a radiator, for example, is normal. However, if you regularly need to top up the system or the gauge keeps falling towards zero, it is worth investigating. Repeated pressure loss is not something to ignore, as it can eventually leave you without heating or hot water.

What boiler pressure should be

Most modern combi boilers operate at around 1 to 1.5 bar when the heating is cold. When the radiators are running, the pressure will usually rise a little as the water warms up. The exact recommended setting depends on the boiler manufacturer, so always check the instructions for your particular model.

If the pressure falls below roughly 1 bar, some boilers may display a fault code or stop working to protect themselves. Topping it up may restore the boiler temporarily, but it does not solve the underlying issue if the pressure continues to fall.

Why is my boiler losing pressure repeatedly?

A sealed central-heating system should retain its water. Therefore, regular pressure loss usually points to a leak, a component fault, or water having been released from the system. The following are the most common causes homeowners encounter.

A leak from a radiator, valve or pipe

Even a very small leak can gradually reduce system pressure. Check around radiators, radiator valves, exposed pipework and the boiler itself for damp patches, drips, rust staining or white and greenish deposits. These can indicate a slow leak that has dried before becoming obvious.

Leaks beneath floors, behind walls or in boxed-in pipework are harder to spot. You may notice a persistent damp patch, peeling paint, a musty smell, or floor coverings lifting in one area. Avoid lifting floorboards or opening up walls without advice, as the leak may not be where the visible signs appear.

A leak at a radiator valve can sometimes be repaired by a heating engineer without major disruption. Hidden pipework leaks can be more involved, so early attention often helps limit damage to your home.

You have recently bled a radiator

Bleeding radiators releases trapped air and a small amount of water. As a result, the boiler pressure can fall afterwards. In this situation, repressurising the system in line with your boiler manual is usually all that is needed.

It should not become a frequent task. If your radiators repeatedly need bleeding, or if pressure drops again within days or weeks, there may be a leak or another fault allowing air into the system.

The pressure relief valve is releasing water

Your boiler has a pressure relief valve, often called a PRV. It is a safety device designed to release water if pressure becomes too high. If it opens, water is usually discharged through a copper pipe that leads outside the property.

Check this external pipe carefully when the boiler is cool. If it is dripping or there is regular evidence of water beneath it, the pressure relief valve may have released water. This can happen because the valve itself is not sealing properly after opening, or because another component is causing the system pressure to rise too high.

Do not block, cap or interfere with this pipe. It is a safety outlet and should only be assessed by a qualified Gas Safe engineer.

A faulty expansion vessel

The expansion vessel manages the natural increase in water volume as your heating warms up. When it is working properly, the pressure rises modestly while the boiler is on, then reduces again as the system cools.

When the vessel loses its charge or its internal diaphragm fails, pressure may climb sharply while the heating is running. The pressure relief valve can then discharge water outside. Once the system cools, the gauge may be very low, leaving you to refill it again and again.

A useful clue is a large change on the gauge: perhaps 1 bar when cold, rising close to 3 bar with the heating on, then dropping back down afterwards. This needs professional diagnosis and repair rather than repeated topping up.

A fault inside the boiler

Less commonly, pressure can be lost through an internal boiler component, such as a heat exchanger, pump seal or automatic air vent. These faults are not suitable for DIY work. Boiler casings should only be removed by a Gas Safe registered engineer, both for safety and to ensure the appliance is correctly reassembled and tested.

If your boiler is older and has developed more than one fault, repair may still be sensible. It depends on the cost of the work, the boiler's condition, the availability of parts and how reliable it has been overall. A professional can explain the options clearly rather than pushing you into a replacement you do not need.

Safe checks you can make at home

Before arranging a repair, there are a few simple checks that can help identify what is happening. Look at the pressure gauge when the boiler is cold, then again after the heating has been running for an hour. Make a note of the readings rather than relying on memory.

Inspect visible radiators and pipework for signs of moisture, and look outside at the pressure relief discharge pipe. If you have recently bled a radiator, check whether the pressure simply needs restoring once. Your boiler handbook may show the correct filling-loop procedure for your model.

Only top up the system to the manufacturer’s recommended cold pressure. Overfilling can cause the pressure relief valve to operate and create another problem. If you are unsure which valve to use, cannot find the instructions, or the boiler pressure falls soon after topping up, stop there and arrange an inspection.

It is also sensible to keep an eye on how often you need to repressurise. Once after radiator bleeding is normal. Every few days, every week, or several times over a heating season is a clear sign that the system needs attention.

When to call a Gas Safe engineer

Book a boiler repair visit if the gauge repeatedly falls, you can see a leak, water is coming from the outside discharge pipe, or the boiler is showing a fault code. A qualified engineer can pressure-test the system, find leaks safely, check the expansion vessel and pressure relief valve, and make sure the boiler is operating within the correct limits.

You should seek help promptly if you notice water around the boiler, a significant leak, damage to ceilings or walls, or if the boiler has stopped working. Turn off the heating if water is escaping heavily, and do not attempt to remove the boiler casing or repair internal parts yourself.

Annual boiler servicing also gives an engineer the opportunity to spot early signs of pressure-related problems before they become a cold-weather breakdown. It helps protect efficiency, safety and, where applicable, the manufacturer’s warranty.
